The Book of Dust: The Secret Commonwealth

By Philip Pullman

Follow the next stage of Lyra's adventure in the highly-anticipated sequel to La Belle Sauvage...

Lyra Silvertongue is now a young woman in her second year as an Oxford student. When her daemon, Pantalaimon, witnesses a murder, they are forced to navigate their relationship in a way they could never have imagined, drawn into the complex and dangerous factions of a world that they had no idea existed.

Pulled along on his own journey is Malcolm Polstead; once a boy with a boat and a mission to save a baby from the flood, now a man with a strong sense of duty and a desire to do what is right.

Both Lyra and Malcolm must travel far beyond the edges of Oxford, across Europe and into Asia, in search of what is lost - a city haunted by daemons, a secret at the heart of a desert, and the mystery of the elusive Dust.

The second volume of The Book of Dust develops and deepens Philip Pullman's epic parallel world. It is a powerful adventure and a thought-provoking look at what it is to understand yourself, to grow up and make sense of the world around you. This is storytelling at its very best from one of the world's greatest writers.

I started writing as soon as I could hold a pencil. I loved the feeling of making marks on a piece of paper, but it wasn't until some time later that I learned to connect that pleasure with a quite different pleasure, that of being absorbed in a story. Because I loved stories too - every kind of story, from fairy tales to Superman, from school stories to horror stories. As a matter of fact I still do.
